Do you have leaky energy?
What It Is, Why It Happens, and How to Shift It
Leaky energy is a concept that applies to people in committed relationships (e.g. marriage or boyfriend/girlfriend). Leaky energy is when you direct your sexual energy—your sexual life force called your eros—to someone outside of your relationship. It’s not crossing a clear boundary like kissing, texting, or asking someone out. Instead, it’s subtler. It’s that flirtatious, magnetic energy you’re giving off when you’re chatting with someone on a plane or with a colleague at work. That subtle energy is leaking out of you. From the outside, people might think you’re interested in that person because it is the same energy you give when you are interested in someone else. It can look like a touch on the mid or lower back, talking too close, or an hour-long flirty conversation with someone you just met at the concert. You might not be technically crossing any boundary, but you probably wouldn’t have that same energy if your partner was watching.
I was incredibly leaky in a past relationship. I understood at some level how this energy came off (because men would seem surprised to learn I was in a relationship), but I mostly thought I was just being friendly and innocent. I decided that I didn’t need to turn off my vibrant energy just because I was in a relationship, when I knew I’d never cross the line. But really, I was leaking out that erotic energy in ways that created harm. Even if you aren’t breaking a clear rule, that energy still matters.
Being leaky is the opposite of being able to consciously contain your energy. We all have the ability to turn our sexual energy on and off and to direct it with awareness. But most people aren’t taught how to do this–it requires energy management and awareness. As a culture, we don’t have great language for energetic experiences that are more subtle. As a result, we end up either excusing the leaky energy or demanding that the other person totally shut off their eros, which isn’t great either. I personally experienced that. Because I did not know how to manage and direct that energy, I felt like the options were to totally shut it off, or let it move where it wanted. But there is a middle ground: desire is natural, but it is important to learn the correct circumstances to express that desire.
Three Reasons Leaky Energy Shows Up:
From what I’ve seen, there are three main reasons people are leaky:
Lack of Awareness
Some people have no idea what they’re doing. They don’t realize the quality of their energy or how they’re coming across. It’s unconscious. Like a big puppy who doesn’t realize how much space it takes up, they’re unaware of how their presence impacts others. Many adults are like this because we don’t grow up with education about energy, including how to sense it, manage it, or direct it.Disrespect (or Indifference)
Others know they’re being leaky but don’t care. They may not fully respect their partner, or they may resent them. They may not ever cross a physical boundary or emotionally connect with someone they are romantically interested in, but they’ve decided its fine to flirt.
Sexual Frustration
This one’s common. You’re not sexually fulfilled in your relationship, so the energy leaks out in random encounters, like a flirty conversation on a flight, extra warmth toward a colleague, because it doesn’t have a place to flow at home. This could be conscious or unconscious.
Ways to Stop Being Leaky
If you notice yourself being leaky, take it as a sign that there’s room for more awareness, embodiment, and honesty. Here are three ways to shift it:
Get Familiar With Your Energy
Develop awareness of how your sexual energy flows in your body. Notice the sensations, what amplifies your energy, what contracts it, and how desire shows up in you. The more present you are with your own eros, the easier it is to consciously choose where you want it to go. Pretending that you never feel desire towards anyone besides your partner doesn’t help. Be honest with yourself and build awareness.
Practice Embodiment Daily
Build a deeper mind-body connection. Check in with yourself each day: How am I feeling? What’s the quality of my energy? What do I need? When you become more aware of all parts of yourself, including emotional, physical, and energetic, you naturally gain more awareness in the moment of when your energy starts to open or cross into leaky territory.
Be Honest About Your Relationship
Try to understand why you are doing this. Ask yourself: Am I fulfilled in this relationship? Are my sexual and emotional needs being met? Does my relationship allow me to bring my most vibrant self forward? If not, can you work with my partner to shift that? Do you want to? Leaky energy is often a symptom of unspoken truths. Facing those truths with honesty creates space for deeper intimacy and trust.
Leaky energy undermines safety and trust in relationships. Your partner can feel it, even if they don’t have the language to name it. When you clean it up, you create the conditions for deeper intimacy, stronger trust, and richer sexual connection.
If you notice yourself being leaky, take it as an invitation to grow. The more aware and honest you are, the more you can spot the underlying issues that are causing the leaky energy and address them so you can have a healthier, deeper relationship.
